Sqatting, It’s Not A Spectator Sport

"Good things come to those that wait"???? I thought as I stared at the squat rack this morning. Are you kidding me! I could sit there and just look at it and visualize squatting my weight. Having squatted close to 200 pounds and only weighing 145 in my day, I'm good at that. The feel … Continue reading Sqatting, It’s Not A Spectator Sport

Where Is Your Promised Land

As we approach "hump day", Wednesday, this Wednesday in the middle of Holy Week is a chance for me to catch my breathe as a busy Triduum looms just one sleep away. In being so privileged to lead/host our community last night at the Seder, I have a reflection to share. Where is your promised … Continue reading Where Is Your Promised Land

"Most people live what I call "The Niagara Syndrome."    I believe that … Continue reading The Niagara Syndrome

Does being obese cause me to not do well on job interviews?

Being healthy in job interviews is just another advantage and “The Slight Edge”

tbellamy's avatarThe Not Big Anymore, Formerly Fat Guy

Obese woman

It very definitely can.  We all know it’s not supposed to, but it’s hard for an interviewer not to shift into instant first impressions in line with the fat stereotype, even if they are themselves obese.

So you may be immediately classified as out of control, undisciplined, lazy, and someone who’s going to spend a lot of time eating.

Even if this isn’t the case, if you’re tied with another contestant for the job and that person is like you in every way but they’re in great physical shape, they may be classified as being more of a disciplined, self-aware, self-controlled person, a real go-getter, someone the boss could take into customer meetings knowing they’d make a good impression.  Maybe the comparison is not as straightforward, it may add only 1% to the impression you give, but that 1% may easily be enough to tip the scales in their favor.
